NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

16th December, 1965 : Two American Gemini spacecraft achieved the first rendezvous in space yesterday. They then flew side by side, only six to ten feet apart, for two orbits. Gemini 7, crewed by Frank Bormann and James A Lowell Jr, had been in orbit for 11 days when Gemini 6, with Walter P Schirra Jr and Thomas P Stafford blasted off from cape Kennedy. During the next few hours Schirra fired the rocket motors several times to edge into the higher orbit of the other craft. The meeting finally came over the Pacific, during Gemini 6‘s fourth orbit.
