december memories / 21

21st December, 1916 : President Wilson has sent peace overtures to London. He proposes that all nations now at war should state what their peace terms are. The note came as a surprise, and an unwelcome as far as London is concerned, because, following peace feelers from Berlin, it seems to endorse their initiative. The Germans are jubilant. The US Secretary of State, Robert Lansing, has issued a statement denying any such intent. It added that the reason for the Note was that “we are drawing near to war ourselves”, and that the US therefore wanted to know the belligerents’ terms.

[You can’t have the peace too early]
