NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

23rd December, 1953 : The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh began their Australasian tour today with an overwhelming wave of affection fro the people of Auckland. As the Royal Yacht Gothic appeared on the horizon sirens from ships in Waitemata Harbour sent out the first greeting, and 1,000 small craft slipped their moorings and ignored the dismal weather as they went out to escort the Royal couple. Many broke the patrol lines and sailed within yards of the ship. Three cheers, given spontaneously by the crowd on the wharf, were in advance of the Royal salute of 21 guns, as the Queen stepped ashore for the official greeting ceremony.

[No rest for the wicked]
