27th December, 1941 : Australia looks to the United States as the major factor in a plan for defence in the Pacific, according to the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin. “We know the problems the United Kingdom faces,” he said in a special message to the Australian people. “But we know, too, that Australia can go and Britain can still hold on.” Mr Curtin said the United States would be the keystone of Australia’s external policy, which would be shaped towards obtaining Russian aid and working out , with the US as a major factor, a Pacific strategy with the British, Chinese and Dutch.
