NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
29th April, 1970 : The nation founded on the discoveries of Captain James Cook 200 years ago today watched a formal re-enactment of his landing at Kurnell, in Botany Bay. More than two million Australians saw the ceremony on television and 10,000 were at Kurnell for the Cook bicentenary. The Royal yacht Britannia stood offshore, and the Queen, Prince Phillip and Princess Anne watched from the official stand. As “Cook” was rowed ashore, he was upstaged by two university students carrying a giant Union Jack. As the imposters landed, the crowd rose as one, thinking the pranksters were the official party.
