5th May, 1974 : Willy Brandt, the West German Chancellor and architect of Ostpolitik – detente with the Communist Bloc – resigned after an East German spy was discovered working in his office. The spy, Gunter Guillaume, had been a close aide to the Chancellor since 1970, despite warnings he was under suspicion as a security risk. Brandt was the first Social Democrat Chancellor in West Germany’s 25-year post-war history. He is said to have been depressed in recent months.
