9th May, 1978 : The body of Aldo Moro, a senior Italian statesman, who five times served as prime minister, was found today wrapped in blankets and stuffed into a small Renault car in central Rome. His Red Brigade captors, who shot him dead with a burst from a machine-pistol, made a final grim political joke. They left the car half-way between the headquarters of his Christian Democrat party and those of the Italian Communist Party. On the day he was kidnapped the two parties were to become allies in government.
