10th May, 1973 : A bill to allow abortions on request up to 12 weeks into pregnancy, was defeated in the Australian House of Representatives today. As the House debated the Private Member’s Bill, sponsored by Victorian Labor Backbenchers, Tony Lamb and David McKenzie, Right to Life and Abortion Reformers demonstrated on the lawns of Parliament. All members of the Opposition voted against the Bill. Ten ministers, including the Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, voted for it. The Minister for Education, Kim Beazley, in an emotional speech, described the bill as a move for “birth control by killing”.
