sunset-7-BeautifulFreePictures.com12th May, 1973 : A federal judge dismissed all charges against Dr Daniel Ellsberg in the Pentagon Papers case yesterday on the grounds of “improper Government conduct”. Ellsberg had been prosecuted for espionage, theft, and conspiracy, along with Anthony Russo, for having copied the secret official history of the Vietnam war, and giving it to the New York Times. Judge William Matthew Byrne said that misconduct on the part of the Government had made a fair trial impossible. Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy, two of the former White House aides convicted in the Watergate break-in affair, had broken into the office of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist.
