NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
16th May, 1929 : The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, founded recently at the suggestion of Louis B Meyer of MGM to help the industry attain more dignity, has hit on a way of attracting world attention to its products – or so it hopes. Last night the Academy’s first awards for outstanding achievements by actors, directors, writers, technicians and producers were presented by its president, Douglas Fairbanks. They take form of gold-plated statuettes, just over a foot tall, of a naked man plunging a sword into a reel of film. The awards are to be annual.
