19th May, 1943 : Speaking with easy familiarity and bubbling with confidence, Mr Churchill delivered another historic speech at a joint session of the United States Congress in Washington tonight. While he spoke bells pealed at St Paul’s in London as the King led national thanksgiving there for the Allied victory in Tunisia. The Prime Minister, introduced as “one of the outstanding figures on all the earth”, told the Americans: “We will wage war at your side against Japan while there is breath in our bodies and while blood flows in our veins.” He pledged RAF help to reduce Japanese cities to ashes.

[The RAF was not needed, but it was a nice thought]
