6th June, 1963 : Martial law was declared in Teheran tonight after a day of rioting in which at least 20 people were killed. General Nassiri, the military governor, sent in tanks and troops with fixed bayonets to battle with mobs of religious rioters. Police were attacked and cars and buildings were set ablaze. Disorders began after the arrest of Rouahallah Khomeini, a Moslem religious leader. He organised demonstrations against the Shah’s land reform programme and votes for women, bitterly opposed by fanatical Mullahs.
