7th June, 1968 : Michael Tom Somare, the newly elected leader of Papua New Guinea’s biggest political party, the Pangu Pati, has called for a radical revision of black-white relations in the Australian territory. Mr Somare, 32, a journalist, shocked the Australian administration with his maiden speech today, in which he condemned the white dominated ministerial system. Pangu has a policy for immediate self government for PNG, but Mr Somare said the most urgent need was for communications: “Not just roads and bridges, but between black and white, and black and black.”
