13th June, 1964 : As the Territory of Papua New Guinea opened its first elected House of Assembly today, the Administration was preparing to use force against about 2,000 people on New Hanover who want President Johnson to rule them. The president Johnson cultists have refused to pay taxes. They have collected £1,100 to “buy” President Johnson as their ruler. New Members of the House of Assembly, fearing the all too familiar spread of a cult, made powerful speeches today calling for force to be used. Their rhetoric was a highlight in a subdued opening of the legislature.

[The cargo cult is contagious – half a century later we have the Greens, Labor … all believing that somebody will provide. Al Gore maybe?]
