16th June, 1961 : The leading male dancer of Kirov Ballet from Leningrad broke away from his company today at Le Bourget Airport and ran to a group of French police, shouting “Protect me, protect me!” The dancer were to fly to London to appear at the Covent Garden when Rudolf Nureyev, aged 23, made his move. Afterwards, under police protection, he was seen by Russian officials who tried futilely to change his mind about defecting. Often compared to Vaslav Nijinsky, Nureyev has superb technique, power, and evidently gumption. He defected even though Soviet officials were aware of his plan.

[Neither Nureyev then, nor Iraqis today, ask China, North Korea etc to help. The West is always expected to protect. So what now? Time to fight?]
