NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
19th June, 1980 : Residents in the Coloured – or mixed race – townships outside Cape Town took the law into their own hands, and started shooting at gangs of thugs know as “skollies” who were roaming the streets looting and fire-raising. At least 42 people have been killed and 200 injured. During last night the Cape Flats area was reported to be in a stage of siege, with rioters burning cars and shops and throwing up barricades. The Police Commissioner, General Mike Geldenhuys, sent two planeloads of riot police from Pretoria to Cape Town and told them to shoot to kill.
