20th June, 1906 : Russia is griped by a new crisis promoted by a vicious pogrom against Jews and troop unrest. Murders of Jews and destruction of Jewish property have occurred at Bielostok, a town of some 60,000 people, in west Russia. Hundreds of Jews have been killed in days of rioting some witnesses said was planned by the authorities. Many Jewish shops were wrecked and streams of Jewish refugees arrived at the border with East Prussia. The governor of the area was quoted as telling a Jewish deputation he believed “a little blood-letting” would be useful. He said last year 40 Jews were killed “and we had peace for half a year”.

Mutinies by soldiers and sailors took place at Sevastopol, Kronstadt, and elsewhere.
