NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
25th June, 1981 : The disappearance of the anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay, the operations of the “Mr Asia” drug syndicate and the claimed involvement of the Nugan Hand Bank in drug trafficking are among the areas of interest for a Royal Commission into drug trafficking established today. The joint Federal-State inquiry, to be headed by Mr Justice Donald Stewart, is a response to the growing Government concern over large drug operations conducted by organised crime in Australia. The drug operation centred on Griffith, NSW, is believed to have been run by Robert Trimbole, who fled the country last month, and to be connected with the “Mr Asia” syndicate.
