mussolini23rd March, 1919 : Benito Mussolini, a socialist journalist who broke with the Italian Socialist Party at the beginning of the war, has formed his own party, the Fasci di Combattimento. Appealing to veterans of the war, troubled by the malaise of postwar Italy, the party’s policy is an emotive mixture of socialism and nationalism. Mussolini, son of a blacksmith and a schoolteacher, intends to fight both liberalism and communism.
