NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
14th October, 1900: Dreaming will never be the same again. Sigmund Freud, a well known Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist, has published a book which looks likely to revolutionise the way we regard our sleeping hours, entitled The Science of Dreams. Freud seeks to show that sleep is never just a continuation of life when we are awake. He refuses to recognise sleep as a simple physiological even, and argues that dreams express the frustrations and resentments of our waking hours. In this way, argues Freud, dreams are a means of satisfying our desires. One important factor, he says, is that sometimes our wishes are socially unacceptable and so suppressed by day.
