5th January, 1915 : Catholics throughout the world protested to the Germans today about the detention of Cardinal Mercier in his Malines Palace. The Germans moved in following the Cardinal’s brave pastoral letter, “Patriotism and Endurance”. In it he condemned the Germans for breaking their promise and violating Belgian neutrality. The Germans destroyed 15,000 copies of the letter and demanded that the Cardinal retract but he refused.

[ Old times when Catholics stood for something sensible are long gone. ]
