herero.190412th January, 1904 : Rebellious Herero tribesmen systematically massacred 123 German settlers in South-West Africa. The massacre occurred near Okahandja, seat of the Herero Paramount Chief, Samuel Maharero, who ordered that, while English and Dutch missionaries were to be spared, every German must be killed. However, it is understood that with three exceptions all the women and children were spared and are making their way to military forts in the region. The Hereros struck while the main German forces were in the south quelling an uprising.
