19th January, 1966 : Mrs Indira Gandhi, the daughter of Mr Nehru and newly-elected Prime Minister of India, pledged tonight that she would “strive to create what my father used to call a climate of peace”. She added that she would honour the peace agreement with Pakistan, signed in Tashkent by her predecessor, Mr Shastri, only hours before he died eight days ago. In the vote for the Premiership, Mrs Gandhi, aged 48, beat Morarji Desai, the former Finance Minister, by 355 to 199. Crowds gathered outside Parliament House cheered her wildly when the result became known.

[ Crowds also cheered wildly when she was assassinated in 1984. ]
