NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
20th January, 1907 : “The savage and woman are not what we call intellectual because they are not taught to know and manipulate the materials of knowledge,” declares Professor W I Thomas, sociologist at the University of Chicago. His new book, Sex and Society, promises to create a sensation as it places modern women on an intellectual par with savages. Thomas writes, “The savage is outside the process” because of geography, while women do not participate because it is “neither necessary nor womanly”. He says “ a number of women are realising some definite aim”, but views these examples as “sporadic cases”.
