17th February, 1955 : The Chairman of the Royal Commission on Espionage, Mr Justice Owen, said today that the payment of £5,000 to the Russian defector, Vladimir Petrov, could be justified a hundredfold. The payment, made by the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, was questioned last year by the Labor Leader, Dr Evatt, and has been referred to by Counsel before the Commission. Mr Justice Owen said there was not the slightest difficulty in justifying the payment through the benefits to the free world from information given by the Petrovs.
