5th August, 1979 : A new initiative by the British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, to resolve the Zimbabwe-Rhodesia issue, was unanimously endorsed today by the Commonwealth Conference, which is meeting in the Zambian capital Lusaka. When she arrived last week, Mrs Thatcher was still inclined to accept the so-called internal settlement which has put Bishop Muzorewa in power in Salisbury, but in talks with five key Commonwealth States, Australia, Jamaica, Nigeria ,Tanzania and Zambia, she agree the exiled leaders of the independence struggle must be part of any settlement providing for “genuine” black majority rule.
