6th August, 1912 : The new Progressive Party made it official today by nominating the former Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt, as its presidential candidate. Six weeks ago, at the Republican convention in Chicago, several hundred Roosevelt supporters bolted the Party and applauded Roosevelt when he called for an independent progressive party. Because Roosevelt also said that he felt “as strong as a bull moose”, the press has dubbed his breakaway Progressives “the Bull Moose party”.
