10th August, 1911 : Just before 11 p.m. the House of Lords abandoned the struggle of claiming it was born to rule. By a narrow majority it accepted the Liberal Government’s Parliament Bill asserting the supremacy of the Commons. It did so in the knowledge that the King has promised to side with the elected MPs in an ultimate showdown. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York and 11 Bishops voted for the Bill limiting Lords’ power to delay legislation and two Bishops against. The Tories saw the writing on the wall.
