…from the quill of Antisthenes the Younger

I recall a debate with a friend a long time ago about the Left propagandists enamoured by the demise of manufacturing and the rise of “service industry”. How ‘service’ could be called industry is beyond me. Even ‘sex industry’ is the contradiction in terms, but then, would would I know about sex? The experts know best.

The Western societies by and large can’t make a nail, but still are able to import it, on credit. Old saying by Benjamin Franklin:

For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.”

does not ring a warning bell.

Obviously, we can’t make anything, we can’t cook or pour ourselves a drink – we can’t think. The kingdom is lost before any battle.

About Antisthenes

A Greek philosopher, a pupil of Socrates. Led a revolt, with Diogenes, against the demands of the city-state and the sophistication of life. Accepted the interrelation of knowledge, virtue, and happiness; and sought the ideal condition for happiness in return to primitivism and self-sufficiency. Rejected all social distinctions as based on convention, scorned orthodox religion as a fabrication of lies, and studied early legends and animal life in order to arrive at a true understanding of natural law. The individual was free and self-sufficient when he was master of his passions, secure in his intelligence, impervious to social or religious demands, and satisfied with the poverty of a mendicant. Needless to say, a person who on the Fog of Chaos adopted the Athenian philosopher's name has nothing whatsoever in common with him.
