29th November, 1917 : The Prime Minister, William Morris Hughes, plunged into a fist fight after his hat was knocked from his head by an egg at a conscription meeting in Queensland today. Mr Hughes emerged from the fight with a bleeding hand. A howling mob surrounded the Prime Minister when he arrived in Warwick by train. When Mr Hughes, as Commonwealth Attorney-General, ordered the police to arrest his attackers, the officer-in-charge, Senior Sergeant Kenny, said he only recognised the laws of Queensland and refused.
