2nd December, 1930 : Australia now has its first home-grown Governor-General in Sir Isaac Isaacs, who has been appointed at the age of 75. He is at present Chief Justice of the High Court. The son of a Polish-born Jewish tailor, he grew up at Yackandandah, Victoria, and started his working life as a student teacher and then became a government clerk. He is said to have learned French by following a French knife sharpener around Beechworth and conversing with him. He also speaks Chinese, and his court judgements are regarded as literary gems. He studied law part time, became a successful lawyer, a member of the State Parliament and a Queen’s Counsel.
