8th December, 1923 : The rail line between Brisbane and Townsville was opened today, completing a big link in the country’s network. It is now possible, although few might wish to make the trip, to travel by rail from Perth via Townsville to the western Queensland town of Dajarra – a mere 5,000 miles! The coastal line is strategically very important, and it is hoped that it will be pushed through to Cairns within a year. Another extension from Dajarra to Camooweal will connect the Barkly Tableland sheep country with the port of Townsville.
