21st December, 1958 : General Charles de Gaulle, France’s Prime Minister was today elected the first President of the Fifth Republic by a huge majority. His support was especially strong in French overseas possessions, where Communist and Radical-Socialists candidates failed in many places to get a single vote. De Gaulle supports the entrance of Britain into the Common Market to offset West Germany’s growing power. For Algeria, the new President has announced “punitive or repressive measures” against the rebels.
