sunset-7-BeautifulFreePictures.com23rd January, 1961 : Belgian paratroopers are flying to Stanleyville in the upper Congo to rescue over 1,000 Europeans, victims of a reign of terror imposed by supporters of deposed Premier Patrice Lumumba. Drunken troops are roaming the streets, beating up Belgian men and raping their wives. The local political boss, Antoine Gizenga, says the attacks are reprisals for the Belgian decision to hand Lumumba over to the pro-western Katangan leader, Moise Tshombe.
