30th January, 1934 : A crowd of more that 1,000 men, mostly miners, wrecked and burned buildings owned by foreigners in Kalgoorlie last night in an outbreak of racial violence that caused about £60,000 of damage. The riots were sparked by the death of miner Edward Jordan after a fight with an Italian barman. There are about 1,500 foreigners on the gold fields. About 2,000 miners met in the main street today, and the Chamber of Mines is expected to grant their request to sack the 600 foreigners in the mines.
