3rd February, 1904 : A freak tidal wave swept up the Channel today leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Worst hit were the coastal towns of Sandgate, Portsmouth, St Leonard (where huge waves ripped a 200-foot gash in the sea wall) and Hallsands in Devon where six cottages were washed out to sea. Elsewhere gale force winds and heavy rain have caused considerable damage to property and wide spread flooding has brought work to standstill on farms all over the country.
