7th March, 1963 : The Australian Defence Minister, Athol Towney, said yesterday that the naval radio base being planned for the North West Cape in Western Australia would be able to communicate with submarines. The base has created a controversy, with the Labor Party accusing the Government of being secretive over the uses to which the base may be put. The US is to pay for the construction of the base, about £33 million. The ALP will vote later this month on whether to support it.
