9th March, 1902 : King Edward VII, acting on the wishes of the Australian Government, has issued letters of patent placing British New Guinea under the control of Australia. Until the Commonwealth is fully vested with the government of New Guinea, which is likely to occur during the present session of Parliament, the control and administration will remain in Queensland.

A licensed surveyor in New Guinea, Mr H R Maguire, says that nothing can prevent New Guinea becoming some day one of the world’s richest islands.

[ One of the world’s richest islands needs $553 million of Australian taxpayers money a year to survive. Maybe Mr Maguire missed something important. ]
