21st March, 1927 : The victorious Nationalist Army of General Chiang Kai-shek entered the terrified and chaotic city of Shanghai today. Barely a shot was fired as the Peking army of northern warlords collapsed in mass desertions. Thousands of defeated soldiers fled into the city. They offered their rifles and pistols for sale at ten cents apiece. A British infantry platoon turned back 500 trying to enter the international settlement. For General Chiang the capture of the richest port in China is a decisive event in his attempt to win the civil war and unite the nation.
