22nd March, 1907 : The passage of the “Asiatic Law Amendment Ordinance” has incensed the Indian population of the Transvaal and their young leader, lawyer Mohandas Gandhi, has declared a campaign of “Satyagraha” or civil disobedience. They say they will refuse to register under the terms of the new law when it comes into power on July 1, when all Indians will be required to submit to being fingerprinted and receive a certificate of registration which they must carry with them at all times. Failure to comply means loss of right of residence in the Transvaal and possibly a fine, imprisonment or even deportation.
