23rd March, 1938 : General Franco’s troops attacked all along the eastern front today, relentlessly pushing the battered Government forces back towards Catalonia. The Nationalists claim to have captured thousands of prisoners as well as large quantities of war material. They used smoke screens for the first time in this war to win control of Tardienta and Sangarrene on the Aragon front. Large numbers of new tanks and field guns were used by the Nationals with little reply from the Government guns, while in the air Franco’s planes were obviously superior. Over 150,000 volunteers from at least 10 countries are reported to be involved in the conflict.

[ A useful laboratory for the imminent, more serious conflict, though paranoid Stalin had not learned much. One wonders whether anybody is learning anything from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.]
