No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

18th May, 1942 : Chiang Kai-shek orders the Chinese 5th Army (already virtually reduced to the 22nd and 96th Divisions) to take up positions between Myitkyna and Fort Hertz. The survivors of the 22nd Division eventually reach the Ledo area between July and August. Later the reminder of the 96th Division return to China from Fort Hertz.

Air Marshal A. T. Harris, head of RAF Bomber Command, submits a detailed plan for an assault on Germany based on the assumption that it will be possible to send 1,000 bombers over Germany in a single night.
