No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

5th June, 1940 : At last the ‘Battle of France’ begins. The Germans unleash a fierce aerial and artillery bombardment on the line of the Somme and the Aisne and on the lines of communication of the French armies deployed between Abbeville and the Maginot Line. General Weygand issues a heartfelt appeal to his divisions: “Let the thought of our country’s sufferings inspire in you the firm resolve to resist. The fate of our children depend on your determination.” The order is to defend the positions to the last men.

[ Translation: We, the ‘elites’, had more than twenty years to prepare and had done nothing; so now you die.]

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father. He sometimes despairs that he may be the only one taking the defence of Australia seriously.
