11th July, 1940 : Marshal Pétain is declared ‘Chief of French State’, and a new government is formed.
Grand Admiral Erich von Raeder tries to persuade Hitler not to attack Britain from the sea – i.e. not to give orders for carrying out of Operation Sea Lion. The Admiral considers that the invasion of Britain should be attempted only as a last resort.
