6th September, 1940 : In Rumania popular discontent at the territorial cessions imposed on their country increases, and the ultra-nationalist and anti-Semitic ‘Iron Guard’ movement provokes riots that lead to the abdication of King Carol II, who is succeeded by Crown Prince Michael. General Antonescu assumes power and proclaims himself ‘Conducator’ (leader) as head of a dictatorship.
