12th October, 1940 : Mussolini learns that Hitler has occupied the Rumanian oil wells in order ‘to protect them’. The coup infuriates the Fascist leader, who says to Ciano: ‘Hitler always presents me with a fait accompli, but this time I shall pay him back in his own coin. When he reads the papers he’ll see that I have occupied Greece, and that will make us all square.’

‘What will Badoglio [Commander-in-Chief of Italian armed forces] say?’ asks Ciano. ‘Badoglio doesn’t know yet, but I’ll soon get rid of anyone who finds any difficulty in fighting the Greeks,’ replies Mussolini.

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father.
