26th October, 1940 : The ultimatum to Greece is prepared for the Italian minister in Athens, Emanuele Grazzi, to deliver at 3.00 a.m. on 28 October. The document accuses Greece of adopting a non-neutral attitude towards Italy, and the Greek government is asked to allow Italian forces to ‘occupy, as a guarantee of Greek neutrality and for the duration of the present war against Britain, certain strategic points in Greek territory… Wherever Italian troops meet with resistance, it will be crushed by force of arms, and the Greek government will be held responsible for any consequence.’

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father. He sometimes despairs that he may be the only one taking the defence of Australia seriously.
