NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
8th January, 1969 : Caught on the highway out of Geelong, six people met their end in the inferno that enveloped Victoria today. Trying to escape the flames in their cars, they never had a chance. Nine other people around the state also perished, but this evening fire-fighters said they had most of the blazes under control. More than 80 fires have scorched the state, and although contained now, continue to blaze.
The fires were so numerous that the smell and taste of them penetrated even the heart of Melbourne. More than 130,000 men and 1,300 tankers turned out to fight them. Three firemen trapped near Lara were last seen dashing into the flames, seeking safety on the burnt out side behind.
[ The people, some of us naively vote in to protect us, never learn anything but how fleece the taxpayers. Every year people die in bush fires because politicians have to pacify the noisy misanthropes, masquerading as greenies. ]
