No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

3rd February, 1941 : General Graziani orders retreat towards Tripolitania. German supreme command decides to send the first contingents of the Afrikakorps to Libya.

Admiral Francois Darlan, the French Minister of Marine and a faithful supporter of Petain, and Pierre Laval, now Vice-President of the French Council of Ministers, second to Petain himself, meet the German ambassador Otto Abetz in Paris. They return to Vichy with proposals for ways in which France can be fitted into Hitler’s ‘new order’ in Europe, leading to still closer collaboration with the Germans.
