11th April, 1941 : Rommel launches a violent attack on Tobruk, using Italian Trento and Brescia divisions (attacking along the coast) and the German 5th Armoured Division. The besieged garrison is ready for all eventualities, and the surprise on which Rommel had counted is therefore negated. Inside the Tobruk perimeter besides the Australian 9th Division, are infantry brigade, anti-aircraft regiment and a tank regiment, under command of General Morshead. By the evening the attack by the Italians and Germans has been driven off.

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father. He sometimes despairs that he may be the only one taking the defence of Australia seriously.
